who we are
Sussex Writes is a student-led organisation based at the University of Sussex. We work in partnership with the University’s Widening Participation team to deliver fully-funded creative and critical workshops for local state primary and secondary schools, as well as charitable organisations. We inspire students to enter further education and find their voice - and to explore careers in creative industries.

what we do
Since 2017, Sussex Writes has connected with secondary schools, youth charities, and community organisations across Sussex and beyond.
To date, we’ve worked with over 15 schools in the region and collaborated with various cultural and educational partners. We run online, classroom-based and on-campus workshops, including using Sussex’s very own Victorian Printing Press!
From The Big Sing! with Glyndebourne and East Sussex Music, to the Orlando Project at Charleston, we believe creative writing can take you anywhere! During the Covid-19 lockdown, we even worked internationally, collaborating with Kenya’s Youth Café.
Contact us
Are you an educational or school leader in the Sussex area, looking to support young people in developing interpersonal, creative, and employability skills?
Drop us a line to inquire about workshops, programs or on-campus visits for your school - we’d love to hear from you!
The success of our HPQ (Higher Project Qualification) program has resulted in a generous £10,000, across two years, from our friends at The Brooke Foundation.
Recognition
These partnerships have led to a major SSRP-IDCF funded project on youth mental health in the global south, highlighting our commitment to creative methodologies as tools for change.
Our founding director, Dr Emma Newport, was recognised with the Sussex Better World Award (2020) for her pioneering work with Sussex Writes, and for supporting students in co-creative outreach that raises attainment and strengthens community engagement.
