An On-Campus Day of poetry

‘The Raven’

By Edgar allan poe

A day spent on a university campus

We welcome schools from across Sussex to our on-campus event in which we explore Edgar Allan Poe’s landmark gothic poem ‘The Raven’. From classroom workshops to an interactive university lecture, pupils learn about themes of gothic literature, engage with poetic rhythm and meter, and get a taste of university life in our lecture theatres.

WE OFFER A VARIETY aCTIVITIES

In our classrooms, we arrange the poem as a murder case with a scatter of poetic clues. The pupils interrogate the poem’s meaning in order to determine the true culprit behind the death of the narrator’s beloved Lenore.

Pupils will also be given an interactive lecture on poetic meter. Here, we use a drumkit and natural beats of the daily life to teach the manipulation of poetic rhythm.

Students have fun exploring campus, speaking to university students and having the freedom to interpret poems beyond what the curriculum would usual allow them.
